This analysis is still cast in terms of nations as unitary actors, seeking to promote an agreed national interest. But we are now back in a pre-Westphalian world, like that of the Thirty Years War. Loyalties are (mostly) to one or other side in the global war between democracy and autocracy, not to the nation as represented by its current government. If i were an American for example, I'd be keen to help Canadian candidates and parties committed to hitting back at the US as hard as possible. Similarly, Musk wants to help the global far-right on the basis of ideological kinship not a geopolitical calculation of US national interest.
